FOUNDATION TRANSITION PROGRAM
At Mount Blowhard Primary School we have an outstanding transition program which supports a smooth transition from Kindergarten to school. Our transition program includes 5 sessions throughout Term 4. These sessions increase in duration and gradually introduce children to the routines of the classroom and school, while being supported to form friendships with other students and relationships with staff. Throughout the sessions children complete a variety of activities which encourage them to feel excited and enthusiastic about starting school. Some activities include arts and craft, name practice, listening to picture story books, fine motor activities, songs, oral language activities and meeting their senior student buddy. We ensure that children always leave their transition sessions with some work that they can show their families or take to Kinder to share their school experience. During the earlier sessions, children are shown the play areas and have separate outside play times while they explore the school grounds. As the children become more confident and familiar with the school, they join the students during their play times. At the final transition session, children receive a show bag that has many activities which may be completed at home during the summer holidays. Some of the activities include traceable name sheets, letter and number writing practice, rhyming activity cards, shape cards, I spy beginning sound pages, puzzles, scissors and chalk. These activities are provided with the aim of preparing students for their first year of school, while also keeping them engaged and connected after the transition sessions conclude.
